Optical measurements with the METAOPTICS Web App

At METAOPTICS, we have developed and patented our own optical measurement algorithm for sunglasses in order to integrate this function into a web application for the benefit of our customers.

What are optical measurements used for?

To make glasses for a person’s eyesight, it is essential that the correction is perfectly in front of the pupils.

It depends on the physical data of the person, the glasses and regardless of the medical prescription.

To properly perform optical measurements, it is necessary to know 4 pieces of data:

  • The ½ pupillary distances of the left eye and the right eye.
  • The heights between the pupils and the bottom of the lens for the left eye and for the right eye.
  • If the ½ pupillary distance is a given specific to each individual, the two heights depend both on the individual and also on the frame they wish to equip.

To achieve optimal measurement, we have created a Web-Application which will ( by taking 4 photos and after submitting them to our calculation engine ) allow us to obtain the data required for each individual.

But for this data to be reliable, the photo must be taken in a certain way.

How to prepare for taking measurements?

Ask someone to assist you : they will have to take the photos because “selfies” do not give good results.

Gather:

  • your glasses,
  • your social security card (white side),
  • your prescription or your prescription.

Stand in front of a wall, with a light and uniform background.

Take photos in daylight to avoid artificial lighting and shadows.

You will be asked to take a series of 4 photos :

  • With your sports glasses;
  • Without your glasses and with the card on your chin (bank card format);
  • Without anything;
  • Your prescription or order.

What attitude should we adopt?

Stand up straight and relaxed.

Place your line of sight on the horizon, straight ahead of you.

Look “beyond” the camera, without looking up or down.

Keep the same head posture for each of the 3 photos!

What attitude for the photographer?

Position the device at the same height as the subject’s face.

Stand directly in front of the subject: Make sure both ears are visible.

Move forward or backward so that the subject’s face fills the entire frame.

Do not use the camera zoom!

Feel free to start over if you are not satisfied with the photos.

Once all the photos have been received on our server, we use our calculation engine to define the optical data necessary for the production of your lenses.

If the photos do not allow us to obtain precise optical measurements, our optician will contact you to guide you in retaking the photos in a satisfactory manner.

If you have a new prescription, we advise you to change the lenses on your everyday glasses to ensure the quality of your new prescription.

Highly curved sports glasses require some getting used to.
